Taylor Spatial Frame Options

Hi Folks,
I go up to Bristol Royal Infirmary on 18th april for op.no 8 on my ankle,all previous work has been done in Exeter,so its a bit of a pain but I am told its the top place for frames in the country(hoping someone can verify this !)anyway the idea is to fuse the ankle,no joint in it at present,as the ankle replacement I had three years ago got infected and finally,after loads of messing about and inefective ops. had to be removed.Hence the frame as they don't want to put anything inside again.Had to stop anti-inflamatories but keep on mtx and leflunomide,which I have halved.Anyway after all this waffle I am pretty scared this time as the literature they gave me,although comprehensive is quite frightening and fairly short on practicalities.So am really hoping one of you lovely people out there might have lived with one of these frames and can give me some tips.They have said it will probably be on for over a year depending how my bones grow together,and of course if they manage to debride enough to get rid of the infection. This is last chance saloon and I refuse to contemplate whats next if this fails.Please don't think this is a common problem because it certainly is'nt and I don't want to frighten anyone.
I would be lost without this forum(even if I don't post much) will probably never be off it when I get home from hospital.

DOOOOOO hope everyone reading this is coping O.K. at the moment and maybe having something to look forward to over Easter.
TRIED TO ADD SMIEYS BUT FAILED MISERABLY,THICK OR WHAT?WENT HANG GLIDING THIS MORNING,MUST HAVE BUMPED MY HEAD ON THE WAY DOWN!!!!!!

Good to see you posting sorry you are having so many problems.

I can't help with this but really hope the op goes well on the 18th.

Could I suggest that if there are no takers on the forum that you contact the NRAS helpline as they may have a volunteer who has this frame fitted in the past?

The BRI is my second home! I'm cared for by the Rheummy team there and am due to have surgery on my hand there soon too. I know you'll be in good hands!!

Sorry don't know about Taylor Spatial Frame, but can empathise with you re. the infection ..... last year my THR got infected and had to come out. Thankfully, they put another one in 4 months later. Hope all goes well this time. Let us know what you find out about the frame, I imagine its some kind of external fixator, similar to what they use for a broken pelvis? Its amazing what orthopaedics can do these days.

Not me pesonally but my dear husband had the very same Taylor spatial frame fitted 2006 for correction of 3 things Ankle,forefoot and arches.

due to a form a form of muscular dystrophy,he had this done.if you wish to chat more i can email you.
he does have Arthritis in ankles now but not RA form.
he did every well and got excellent correction result from this frame.
much better than old technique or breaking and putting in plaster.
hes now able play badminto work full time and at some point will have his other foot done same procedure.


his was done at Kings london.


They call to nras would be great for you speak with RA paitent who had same thing.
